Dalmarnock Station Refurbishment For Glasgow's 2014 Commonwealth Games
10th April 2007
<-- Index | Showing 1-53 of 53 pictures | Index -->
In this gallery you will find all of my photographs that I have taken at Dalmarnock station in the East End of Glasgow between the year 2007 and the year 2014.

As part of the preparation and funding for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games and for future rail improvements which have to be made to the city of Glasgow's East End, Dalmarnock station is awaiting confirmation for the go ahead to receive an £8million refurbishment, a refurbishment the station has been crying out for (and its first since opened in 1979).

The refurbishment proposal got announced on Tuesday 15th September 2009 and should hopefully be approved by S.P.T. (Strathclyde Partnership for Transport) on Friday 18th September 2009 if Network Rail hands out a detailed investigation into cost options (funding) for the refurbishment. According to Glasgow's Evening Times Newspaper, they have learned that a funding package has been agreed in principle between S.P.T., Clyde Gateway and Glasgow City Council that will cover the more ambitious options, in terms of the station refurbishement design, which is expected to cost between £7m and £8m.

S.P.T. is expected to request £2m from Glasgow City Council and the same amount from Clyde Gateway and has also made an application for £2.76m for European Funding, with the remaining expected sum of money for the refurbishment to come S.P.T.'s own budget.

The station is going to be one of the main stations carrying people to and from the East / West End of Glasgow to and from the new Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Parks. One games park in Parkhead which will be named 'Athlete's Village, National Indoor Sports Arena and Velodrome' and the other being the new 'Scotstoun Commonwealth Games Stadium' in Glasgow's West End. Both games parks are in currently in the middle of being contructed and will be within a five minutes walking distance from local train stations (Dalmarnock in the east and Scotstounhill in the west of Glasgow).

My aims for this photograph gallery are to show a start to finish sequence of the station from how it looks now up until completion after the £8million refurbishment has took place.

The photographs will clearly show that the station is in desperate need of a refurbishment which will involve a lot of work to get the station looking 'up-to-date' in terms of having a modern looking design and pleasent atmosphere, of which at present the station has neither.

At present the station hosts an eery atmosphere, water pools on and below the platform surface, therefore poor drainage, red sandstone / clay on the station walls and tracks, unpleasent smells from the local sewage works from which pipes run through the station with raw sewage and other strong smells from unwanted substances, a lack of station facilities, including a non - covered or heated waiting building, poor accessibility for disabled passengers and is rarely used by the small local area population for the above reasons mentioned.

The station refurbishment will involve rectifying all of the above (having a finished modern design) plus the installation of many new facilities including a fully covered and heated waiting building and hopefully (even though no talks have been brought up regarding the issue) accessibility for disabled passengers in order to meet the D.D.A. (Disability Discrimination Act).

It is hoping that when the station is refurbished and after the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games have passed, the 'new' station will be used a lot more compared to the 'old' station by local people living in the area instead of using buses as a method of transport to go from place to place.

Dalmarnock station is located in an area where there is not many housing estates, which is partly why it is a station that is not used often and why the station has no Sunday train services calling at the station. With new housing developements currently being / proposed to be built in the area next to where the station is located it is fair to say the station will see many more passengers using the station and train as a method of transportation after 2014.

I will update the gallery with photographs on a regular basis, as previously mentioned and I will also type regular commentary giving updates of the refurbishment of the station and any other related news.

If you wish to contact myself for whatever reason regarding the gallery then please do not hesitate to send me an a message via the website homepage or via my e - mail address:
