A photograph taken from the top of platform 16 at Glasgow Central Low Level station looking east towards Argyle Street station, which can be seen in the distance (area of white / red light). The pillars to the right show how long this platform was before Glasgow Central Low Level station closed on 5th October 1964 as part of the 'Beeching - Axe'. This platform is an island platform consisting of two platform numbers (platform 16 eastbound and platform 17 westbound as they are known today) and was one of two island platforms the station had before closure in 1964. When the Argyle Railway Line (this line) reopened in 1979 about three - quarters of this island platform was reopened and the other island platform remained closed and still does to the present day. IF you look to the left (where the tunnel light is illuminated), this was where the tracks were located to lead into the other island platform which is now an empty long space filled with lights. 06/05/09. 15.JPG Buy Print |
