| 2007 was the final year to see the last of the original Class 318 E.M.U. train fleet which operate on the Central and suburban railway destinations across Glasgow and the west of Scotland.
The original fleet phased out and were non - existant by the end of October 2007 as all 21 - three car sets were sent to Hunslet and Barclay between (Brush Barclay Ltd. known at present) between April 2005 and December 2007 for an extensive overhaul, the first major overhaul to be undertaken on the fleet since introduced. This gallery will show all of the photographs I managed to capture before the last train set out the original 21 - three car fleet phased out before overhaul. The overhaul involved the removal of the inter - unit gangway connection, new drivers cab side windows, a full external repaint (S.P.T. carmine and cream (blood and custard sometimes known) livery, the fitting of a P.I.S. (Passenger Information System), new saloon lighting, new floor and wall covering, new vestibule draft screens and new drivers cab layout (similar to that of the of Class 320 E.M.U. fleet drivers cabs). The 21 - three car fleet were manufactured by B.R.E.L. (British Rail Engineering Limited) and introduced in 1986 - 1987 to mark the completion of the electrification and run a new electric train service between Glasgow Central High Level and Ayr. The fleet cover all destinations from Glasgow Central High Level station (Ayr, Largs, Ardrossan, Wemyss Bay, Gourock, Newton, Neilston and Cathcart Circle services) as well as all destinations on the North Clyde Electric and Argyle Railway Lines (Dalmuir, Balloch, Helensburgh, Drumgelloch, Milngavie, Springburn, Lanark, Motherwell, Coatbridge Central and on a very rare occurence, North Berwick) The first set out of the fleet to be refurbished was set Class 318 251 and the last was Class 318 261. It took the skilled workforce at Hunslet and Barclay (Brush Barclay) roughly 6 - 7 weeks to carry out a full overhaul on a whole three car set, though the duration was longer at times for some sets due to the amount of corrosion found on the exterior body.
